With its saddle stitching, dangling leather tassels and equestrian spirit, the Chloé Marcie has a character all its own. Care should keep that character supple and considered, not erase every sign of a life well lived.
The Marcie first appeared in the mid-2000s and became one of Chloé's most-copied silhouettes almost overnight, prized for the rounded saddle shape and tassel detail that still define it today. Part of its appeal was always that it aged well rather than needing to look untouched, the tassels softening and the leather taking on tone with wear. That's the spirit this ritual is built around: care that lets a Marcie keep developing its own patina, not one that tries to reverse it.
One Marcie, many versions
The Marcie family ranges from carry bags to saddle and smaller shapes, and the material and finish can vary by model and version. Before cleaning or conditioning, check the exact bag’s care details. The silhouette alone cannot tell you whether a panel is smooth leather, suede, canvas or another material.
If your Marcie is suede, protect the nap
Let suede dry fully before caring for it. Use a clean brush made for suede and work lightly, following the material’s care guidance. Avoid rubbing hard, saturating the surface or applying leather balm to suede. If a suitable cleaner is recommended, our Gentle Leather Cleaner is suitable for leather, suede, canvas, fabric and nubuck. On suede, dab a small amount onto a clean microfibre cloth rather than rubbing, patch-test first and allow the area to dry fully before brushing.
If your Marcie is leather, let its finish guide you
Start with a soft, dry cloth to remove loose dust. If the bag’s care guidance allows a liquid cleaner, put a small amount on a clean microfibre cloth, never directly on the bag. Use gentle motions and avoid soaking saddle stitching or tassels. Let the leather dry fully before deciding whether it needs another light pass.
On confirmed leather, subtle changes in tone and sheen can become part of the bag’s story. If the maker’s care guidance permits conditioning, apply a small amount with a soft cloth, patch-test first and let it absorb before buffing. The Luxury Restore & Replenish Kit includes a leather conditioner intended to support suppleness in suitable leather; it is not a suede treatment and cannot reverse structural damage. Do not condition every material by default.
Give the details their own care
Keep cleaners and conditioners away from the brass hardware. Wipe metal details separately with a soft, dry cloth and follow the maker’s guidance for the finish. Treat the leather tassels gently, and avoid pulling or saturating them while caring for nearby panels.
Wear it, care for it, let it be itself
A thoughtful Marcie ritual is simple: identify the exact material, lift dust gently, clean only where needed and use a conditioner only when it is suitable for that leather. Patina can be part of a bag’s history; care is about preserving its feel and character, not chasing a flawless, just-bought look.
