Some handbags make their impression through decoration. Others give a familiar shape an unexpected gesture.

The Ferragamo Hug belongs to the latter. Its wraparound straps draw the sides towards the body, giving a practical handbag a sense of embrace. It is an expressive idea held within a considered silhouette: leather, proportion and hardware working together.

For the collector, that relationship is also the starting point for care. Preserving a Hug means respecting the body and the details that shape it, rather than treating the bag as a single leather surface.

The House: An Italian Craft Perspective

Ferragamo’s identity is rooted in Italian craftsmanship, with footwear an important part of the house’s heritage. That connection offers a useful way to look at its leather goods: not only as objects to admire, but as pieces whose construction must work in use.

In the Hug, practical elements become part of the design language. The straps are not simply added decoration; their arrangement gives the bag its distinctive character.

For the Archive Journal, the appeal is in those relationships. A well-considered piece invites attention to the material, the edges, the fittings and the way they come together.

The Design: A Gesture in Leather

The Hug’s embracing side straps and hardware create a focal point without relying on an elaborate surface pattern. Its character comes from the contrast between the central body and the elements that wrap around it.

Different sizes, leather finishes and variations should be considered individually. The Hug name alone does not establish the exact hide, coating or care needs of the piece you own.

Before beginning a routine, observe how your bag rests naturally. Notice the position of the straps, the opening and the relationship between the sides and the body. Thoughtful care supports that design rather than pulling it into a more rigid shape.

The Archive Ritual: Caring for Your Ferragamo Hug

The aim is a gentle clean where needed, appropriate nourishment where the finish allows it, and considered handling that respects the construction.

Begin with the exact material

Follow Ferragamo’s care guidance for your particular bag and identify the leather and finish before selecting products. Do not assume that the main body, trim and lining can all be treated in the same way.

Where a product is appropriate, patch-test in a discreet area and allow the test to dry fully before assessing the result. A leather’s name does not tell you everything about its colour treatment or surface coating.

Clean with control

For routine surface dust on suitable leather, use a clean, soft, dry cloth. Pay attention to accessible areas around the straps without scrubbing or pushing residue into stitching and fittings.

Where the finish permits cleaning, consider our Gentle Leather Cleaner, suitable for leather, suede, canvas, fabric and nubuck. This material range is not a guarantee of compatibility with every dye or coating. Check Ferragamo’s guidance and patch-test your exact finish first.

Apply a small amount to a clean Archive Essentials Microfibre Cloth, never directly to the bag. On suitable smooth leather, work gently in small circular motions; on compatible suede, nubuck, canvas or fabric, dab lightly rather than rubbing. Avoid saturation and keep the application away from hardware and incompatible surfaces.

Nourish where appropriate

If compatible smooth leather has become dry or lost suppleness, explore the Luxury Restore & Replenish Kit for cleaning, nourishment and protection. Check and patch-test each component separately rather than applying the whole routine automatically.

Use conditioner sparingly according to its instructions. Keep it away from lining, hardware and any incompatible trim. Do not apply a leather-conditioning routine to suede, textiles or specialist finishes without confirming suitability.

Cracking, loose stitching or lifting edge paint calls for assessment by Ferragamo or an appropriately experienced specialist, not repeated product application.

Respect the straps and fittings

Handle the wraparound straps without forcing, twisting or overtightening them. Do not pull on a fitting that has become difficult to operate.

Gently wipe accessible hardware with a clean, soft, dry cloth. Keep perfume, cosmetics and leather-care products away from fittings, and avoid jewellery polish or household metal cleaners unless specifically recommended for that hardware.

Observe the strap attachments and contact points as part of routine care. Changes are easier to address when noticed before continued use adds strain.

Support without distorting

Empty the bag before storage and use clean, acid-free tissue or a suitably sized handbag pillow for gentle interior support. Avoid packing the body so tightly that it pushes against the sides or changes how the straps sit.

A well-fitting organiser can help keep everyday contents in order. It should follow the interior and leave the opening comfortable to use.

For an Archive Essentials liner made to your bag’s dimensions, contact us to discuss a made-to-spec option. Share the model, size and interior measurements so we can discuss an appropriate fit. Our existing model-specific liners should not be assumed to fit a Ferragamo Hug.

Store with intention

Keep the bag in its dust bag in a dry, ventilated place, away from direct sunlight, heat and damp conditions. Let handles and straps rest naturally rather than trapping them beneath the body.

Avoid tightly sealed plastic storage and do not place heavy items on top. For the wider principles, read How to Store a Luxury Handbag.

A Design Worth Understanding

The Hug’s appeal lies in an idea made tangible: a wraparound gesture expressed through leather and fittings. Preserving that character begins with understanding how the parts work together.

Stewardship is the ultimate luxury. Respect the finish, care for the details and support the shape without asking it to become something else.
