The Archive Journal: Restoring a 1980s Mulberry (Part 2)

1980s Mulberry handbag restoration using Archive Essentials leather care products

Introduction

In Part 1, we introduced this 43-year-old Mulberry Roll Bag — a piece of design history featuring the brand's iconic ostrich-embossed hide. After four decades, the leather was showing its age: dry, thirsty, and losing the rich mahogany depth that defines this era of Mulberry. Today, we take you inside the Atelier to finish the restoration. If you'd like to understand more about the properties of embossed bovine leather before reading on, our guide to the most common leather types is a useful primer.

The Diagnosis

When a bag has been in circulation for 43 years, it doesn't just need a wipe-down. The leather fibres were dehydrated, and the ostrich-embossed texture had trapped years of micro-dust, dulling the finish. We also identified minor scuffs along the high-wear edges that required a bespoke touch-up to ensure they didn't become permanent damage.

The Ritual: Precision Restoration

  1. Deep Cleanse & Hydration: We began with the Luxury Restore & Replenish Kit — a two-step process: first, lifting impurities from the deep grooves of the ostrich embossing; second, feeding the leather the natural oils it has been missing for decades.

  2. Custom Colour Matching: This was the most technical stage. Rather than using a generic shade, I custom-mixed our precision touch-up pens to match the specific 1980s patina of this hide. By applying colour only to the affected scuffs, we created a seamless, invisible repair that respects the bag's original character.

  3. The Final Seal: To lock in the moisture and protect the leather for the next decade, I applied our Replenishing Balm — acting as both a conditioner and a protective seal, restoring that soft, supple Atelier Finish.

The Result:

Ready for Her Debut The difference isn't just visual — it's tactile. The leather is now supple, softer, and deeply nourished. By choosing to restore rather than replace, this piece remains part of the archive for another generation.
