The 2014 Mulberry Bayswater Stripe is, in my view, the most architecturally interesting Bayswater Mulberry ever made. By pairing the matte, velvety finish of nubuck with the polished sheen of smooth calf leather, Mulberry created a study in contrast. But for the collector, this beauty comes with a challenge: nubuck is one of the most delicate materials in the luxury world.
The Nubuck Challenge
Unlike smooth leather, which has a protective top-coat, nubuck is leather that has been buffed to create a soft, "nap" texture. It is porous, meaning it acts like a sponge for oils, water, and city pollutants. Many owners are so afraid of ruining their nubuck that they leave the bag in the dust bag for years.
At Archive Essentials, we believe that's a tragedy. A bag this beautiful deserves to be carried.
The Archive Essentials Ritual
The biggest mistake owners make is using standard leather creams or waxes on nubuck. Do not do this. Waxes will mat the nap and permanently darken the leather, ruining that signature matte finish. To steward your Bayswater Stripe, you need a ritual that respects the texture.
- The Clean: Use our Gentle Leather Cleaner on the smooth leather sections. For the nubuck stripes, a soft, dry brush is your first tool — gently lift surface dust and restore the "nap" of the leather. For stubborn marks on the nubuck, our Gentle Leather Cleaner can be used very sparingly on a microfiber cloth — dab, don’t rub — to avoid matting the fibres. The Gentle Leather Cleaner is formulated to be safe on nubuck, suede, canvas, and fabric, but always apply with a light hand on delicate textures.
- The Protection: This is non-negotiable. Because nubuck is so porous, our Mould Cleanse & Preventative is your best friend. It creates an invisible, breathable shield that prevents moisture and oils from sinking into the fibres. Applying this once every few months is the single best way to ensure your stripe pattern stays crisp.
- The Nourishment: Our Archive Replenishing Balm is designed for the smooth leather sections of your bag. Use it very sparingly — a tiny amount goes a long way. Apply it with a soft cloth to the smooth leather trim and handles to keep them supple and prevent cracking, ensuring you keep the balm well away from the nubuck stripes to maintain their matte finish.
A Note from the Founder
I’ve always felt that the Bayswater Stripe is the “architectural” Bayswater. It’s a bag that demands attention, and it’s a bag that rewards the owner who takes the time to learn its specific needs. I know nubuck can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right ritual, you can keep that stripe pattern vibrant and that nubuck soft for years to come.
