A bag looking grubby needs the right cleaner, not necessarily a whole new care routine. But which formula should you choose?
Archive Essentials offers three cleaners with different formulations and material ranges. Start with your bag’s exact material and finish, followed by the cleaning job you want to address.
Plant-Based Leather Cleaner: for everyday grime on leather

Choose our Plant-Based Leather Cleaner when you want a coconut-derived soap formula for everyday dirt and grime on compatible smooth, textured or pebbled leather.
It lifts impurities while respecting the leather’s natural oils, leaving the surface clean and ready for appropriate follow-on care if needed.
This is the cleaner I used on my own Georgia May Jagger Biker. You can see the before-and-after comparison in the Archive Gallery, with the leather’s distinctive grain still visible after cleaning.
Suitable for leather only. Not for suede, canvas, fabric or nubuck.

Gentle Leather Cleaner: for leather, suede, canvas, fabric and nubuck

Choose our Gentle Leather Cleaner when you need a pH-balanced formula suitable for leather, suede, canvas, fabric and nubuck.
It lifts everyday dust, oils and grime. Its broader material range makes it a useful choice for a collection containing different surfaces, but it does not mean every part of a mixed-material bag can be treated without checking.
The application method matters. On suitable smooth leather, use gentle circular motions. On suede, nubuck, canvas and fabric, dab lightly rather than rubbing. Never saturate the material.
I used this cleaner alongside the Preventive Protocol Kit on my Eggplant Bayswater. The Archive Gallery shows the result of that combined routine, rather than attributing the whole result to the cleaner alone.

Luxury Foaming Leather Cleaner: for built-up dirt on leather

Choose our Luxury Foaming Leather Cleaner when compatible leather needs attention to built-up dirt and oils, particularly around pebbled and grained surfaces.
Its light, pH-balanced foam helps lift dirt from textured leather without stripping its natural oils. Apply a small amount with a soft cloth for controlled cleaning.
The Foaming Cleaner also forms the cleansing step of our Luxury Restore & Replenish Kit. The Acqua Bayswater demonstration in the Archive Gallery shows that complete cleansing, conditioning and protection routine, not the effect of the cleaner in isolation.
Suitable for leather only. Not for suede, canvas, fabric or nubuck.

Which should you buy?
- For everyday cleaning on compatible leather, choose Plant-Based Leather Cleaner if you prefer a coconut-derived soap formula.
- For compatible leather, suede, canvas, fabric or nubuck, choose Gentle Leather Cleaner, subject to the exact finish and the bag maker’s instructions.
- For built-up dirt on compatible leather, especially textured surfaces, choose Luxury Foaming Leather Cleaner.
There is some overlap between the formulas. You do not need all three for one bag, and “foaming” does not mean you should scrub harder. Choose the formulation and material range that suit the job.
Why choose Archive Essentials?
I care for a personal archive of more than 100 luxury handbags. Every care product I stock is personally hand-tested on a curated selection of hides, and I use the range on pieces from my own collection.
That experience matters because the aim is not simply to remove dirt. It is to clean while respecting the finish, grain and character that made the bag worth keeping.
In the Archive Gallery, you can examine real demonstrations and see which products were used. You are choosing care backed by hands-on experience, visible examples and practical guidance, rather than a promise that every mark will disappear. Results vary with material, finish and condition.
Before you begin
Check the bag maker’s instructions and confirm the exact material and finish. Our Know Your Leather guide helps explain the differences. A cleaner’s broad material suitability does not establish compatibility with every dye, coating, trim or decoration.
Patch-test in a hidden area and allow it to dry fully before assessing the result. Apply cleaner to a cloth, never directly to the bag, follow the product’s instructions and avoid saturation. For a full walkthrough, read How to Clean a Luxury Handbag Safely.
For untreated Vachetta, patent, metallic or other specialist finishes, seek finish-specific advice rather than treating them as ordinary leather. Cracking, peeling, missing colour and damaged stitching need assessment, not repeated cleaning.
